Good Morning and Welcome Back! We will be wrapping up genetics this week and moving onto chemistry next week.
In your table groups I would like you to work together to choose a meal, perhaps one that you enjoy eating ( i.e.turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a yummy roll) Make a list of all the ingredients that go into that meal and research to find if your foods from your meal are in any way genetically modified or altered. Describe what the ingredient is, how it is modified, and to what extent.
When you are finished please review the class calendar for what we have planned for the week ahead. Happy 2011!

ReplyDeleteOur meal is a pizza with a soda. Pizza, which has flour, baking soda, cheese, marinara sauce; which in that has tomatoes, dough, salt and pepper, and oregano. If the flour is white that means it has been bleached. Baking soda is corn based, and corn is genetically modified so therefore baking soda is also genetically modified. The dough is genetically modified because it has bleached flour and baking soda, and both of those ingredients are genetically modified so that means so is the dough. The soda has corn based ingredients such as corn syrup and fructose, so that means since corn is genetically modified soda is too. The cheese is rennet which speeds up the process of making cheese so therefore cheese is genetically modified. Oregano comes from the leaf of a plant that could possibly be genetically modified. Ingredients in any type of food is generally found to be genetically modified for speeding up a process, which only benefits the rate in which the company sells the items, and does not benefit your health.
ReplyDeleteOur meal is Spaghetti with marinara sauce (and meatballs).
ReplyDeleteIngredients:
Pre-Packaged Pasta* - A raw grain that is cooked to become spaghetti. Originated in Italy
Canned Tomato Sauce - Smushed tomatoes that may contain various chemicals...
Fresh Basil - A herb
Cheese - A dairy product created from milk. Many varieties exist, use your favorite.
Ground Hamburger - A form of cow meat.
Butter - A fattening used in most cooking.
Genetically Modified Ingredients:
Tomato - A round and somewhat squishy red fruit. Genetically enhanced for the proper development of the crop and to sustain freshness longer. Also is genetically engineered with bacteria derived kanamycin resistance genes (enzyme), backwards DNA, antibiotic marker genes, founder genes, and viruses.
Ground Hamburger - Cows, in which ground hamburger comes from, can be genetically modified to produce extra growth hormones, leading to more milk production.
Butter - Butter is made from milk which comes from cows. See Ground Hamburger
*Pasta Ingredients
Flour - Ground wheat
Eggs - Things laid by chickens
Salt - A mineral, also found in the sea
Water - H2O
Genetically Modified Pasta Ingredients:
Flour - Depends on the type you get. GMO (genetically modified organism) flour is made from grains or other plants that have been created through genetic engineering. Flour can contain Amylase, an enzyme of sorts.
Eggs - Depends on the type you buy. Genetically modified eggs will have mothers that may have been fed certain products to fertilize faster.
Hamburger with Fries
ReplyDeleteBun- There is genetically modified yeast (which makes bread/buns). The danger of GM yeast is a possible boost in biofuels.
Meat-The cows that the meat comes from are not modified therefore the meat is not GM, however the cows sometimes injected with growth hormones.
Tomato-Tomatoes have been a representation of genetically modified food for many years. In 1994, GM tomatoes hit the market in the US. GM tomatoes have since disappeared.
Lettuce- Scientists have made a GM lettuce crop. They are looking into whether or not GM lettuce can cure diabetes or not.
Mustard-They are still debating whether or not to use the GM mustard, but it does exist.
Ketchup-See Tomatoes
Fries- They are still testing if potatoes are safely GM, but in the meantime fries are not GM.
Our meal is pizza and soda. Soda is corn based due to the corn syrup and/or fructose, which the corn is genetically modified. Soda is genetically modified. The ingredients of pizza- flour (grains, wheat)- white flour is bleached, which would be altered. Baking soda- is corn based and corn is genetically modified. Cheese-they are modifying rennet, a dried extract used to curdle milk for cheese, which speeds up the cheese-making process. Marina sauce (tomatoes)- GM so that it stays fresh longer in the grocery stores. Oregano- comes from a leaf from an oregano plant. This could be genetically modified to be grown faster. Ingredients in any type of food is generally found to be genetically modified for speeding up a process, which only benefits the rate at which the company sells these items and definitely does not benefit your health. Scientists are testing GM varieties of green peppers, onions, tomatoes, cheese, and also wheat.

Our meal is pizza and soda.
ReplyDeleteIngredients of a cheese pizza are flour (wheat), baking soda, cheese, marinara sauce (tomatoes), and oregano. Some commonly added toppings are green peppers and onions.
Ingredients of soda are corn syrup/fructose.
Flour is made of wheat which is modified to digest easier. Cheese is modified by altering rennet to speed up the cheese-making process. Tomatoes are used to make the sauce and they are modified to stay fresh longer and resist pests. Baking soda is corn-based and corn is genetically modified to grow better. Oregano comes from the leaf of a plant which could be genetically modified to grow faster.
Green peppers and onions are GM crops and are modified to stay fresh longer, resist pests, and be able to stay alive without water for periods of time.
Corn syrup/fructose is corn-based, and corn is a GM crop. Therefore soda is genetically modified.

5. Golden Grams
-The wheat in Golden Grams and in the pretzels is being experimented on, but GM wheat isn't being used right now in the world.
-In the Vanilla Almond Bark they use vegetable oil instead of milk, so that it can be microwavable, and the vegetable oil is genetically modified because the vegetables are genetically modified.
- The cocoa in M&M's genetically modified. Cocoa beans come from a plant and so they are susceptible to disease, genetically modified cocoa beans make growing the crop so much easier.

The meal we chose was chicken noodle soup, with salted crackers. It turns out that 3 of 6 ingredients (the 6 being onion, celery, carrots, chicken, noodles, broth) have a risk of being genetically modified. The three not modified as of now include onions, celery, and soup broth. The chickens are given growth hormones and lay eggs with the genes. The noodles can have bleached flour to enhance taste. The carrots, when modified, produce much more calcium. The salted crackers have genetically modified yeast for more proteins and GM baking soda.
ReplyDeleteMy group and I picked chicken noodle soup and saltine crackers as our
ReplyDeletemeal. The ingredients in chicken noodle soup are chicken, chicken
broth, celery stalks, onions, garlic, pasta, and carrots. Carrots are
an ingredient that are genetically modified to produce more calcium.
Because carrots are modified to produce nutrients the human body
needs, it is not incredibly altered in a way that it no longer looks
like a carrot. Pasta is another genetically modified ingredient
because the flour in the pasta Is bleached. Since pasta isn't modified
to help the human body, I would think it is more genetically modified
than carrots because it is modified for looks, not health. Garlic is
genetically modified to not reproduce properly. People question how
valid this statement is. Chicken is genetically modified because pele
put growth hormones in it so that it wipe grow faster and lay ore eggs
per day. Onions, celery, and the broth are not genetically modified,
so HUAC of the ingredients in the soup are genetically modified.
Saltine crackers have ingredients such as flour, salt, baking soda,
and yeast. Flour is genetically modified and bleached to make it look
better. Yeast is also modified to produce human proteins.

Croutons:
ReplyDelete2 large garlic cloves
Pinch of salt
3 tablespoons virgin olive oil
2 cups French baguette slices cut up into 1/2 inch cubes (white bread works too)
Salad:
1 large egg
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 medium garlic clove, crushed
1 pinch salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons anchovy paste or 4 flat anchovies
1 teaspoon capers
1 cup sweet corn
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/3 cup virgin olive oil
2 medium heads of romaine lettuce -- outer leaves removed
1/3 cup Parmesan cheese -- grated
GM foods:
Eggs: Anti-cancer chicken eggs are being produced. GM chickens could be a route to faster, cheaper drugs UK scientists have developed genetically modified chickens capable of laying eggs containing proteins needed to make cancer-fighting drugs. The breakthrough has been announced by the same research centre that created the cloned sheep, Dolly. The Roslin Institute, near Edinburgh, says it has produced five generations of birds that can produce useful levels of life-saving proteins in egg whites. The work could lead to a range of drugs that are cheaper and easier to make.

Romain lettuce: There's been another lettuce recall, this one Romaine lettuce salad products packaged by Fresh Express.
The company said it is recalling salad products with expired Use-by Dates of July 8 - 12 and an "S" in the Product Code because they may have the potential to be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. No other Fresh Express salads are included in the recall.
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2010/07/romaine_lettuce.html
Parmesan cheese: This particular cheese has rennet in it which is a replacement protien that comes from a mammalian stomach.
Sweet corn: Sweet corn uses genetically modified to produce its own insecticide. Officials from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have said that thousands of tonnes of genetically engineered sweetcorn have made their way into the human food supply chain, even though the produce has been approved only for use in animal feed." They can create some sort of defense against the pesky bugs. It will produce a poison that will eventually kill anything bug that tries to eat it. The farmers will not have to insecticide to kill off the bugs.
My group focused on steak, yams, and apple pie.
ReplyDeleteThere is very much genetic modification in steak as there is very much modification in cows, mainly hormone introduction and selective breeding. Even more, cows are also used for their milk meaning that hormones and features implanted for better milk are also found if a cow was used for both.
My group was Jonathan, Derek, and I.
ReplyDeleteMy table group (Connor, Derek, and I) have thought of a dinner that consists of a New York Strip Steak (medium) with Brown Sugar sprinkled on yams as the side. Dessert would be a warm Apple Crisp Pie, and as a drink: Apple Cider.
ReplyDeleteApple Crisp is made of flour, butter, sugar, cinnamon, cooked apples, oats, sometimes ginger, and nutmeg. This pie is genetically modified because the cooked apples are changed so that they don't go brown or spoil quickly. Also, depending on what type of flour you use, it may be modified if it is soy. Lastly, oats are modified to prevent viral infections.
CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP
ReplyDeleteNoodles-The flour in noodles is bleached, so they are not greatly modified
Chicken-There are growth hormones in chicken to make them grow faster. This is only a small adjustment.
Water/Chicken Broth
Carrots-Carrots are genetically modified by adding calcium. Because of this, it is only modified a little.
Garlic Cloves-Garlic is genetically modified so it won't reproduce properly. This is a somewhat large modification.
Celery Stalks
Onions
SALTINE CRACKERS
Flour-The flour is bleached in crackers is bleached, so it is not a large modification
Yeast-Yeast is genetically modified to produce more proteins. This is not a very big change.
Salt
Baking Soda

ReplyDeleteSummer Meal- Salmon, Asparagus, Roasted Potatoes, Spinach Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette , Lemon juice, and lemonade.
Salmon: Genetically modified to reach maturity in half of the normal time, which is 3 years. Extra resources also allows for less cost.
http://technorati.com/lifestyle/green/article/genetically-modified-salmon/
Asparagus: Genetically modified asparagus is changed to become male-only, the tastier of the two sexes of asparagus.
Potatoes: They create two starches, which causes manufacturing issues. New potatoes only include one, amylopectin.
Lemonade and Lemon Juice: Normal.
Spinach: Lasting Leaf Spinach has a longer shelf life, allowing for less money to be wasted.
Grapes (for the Balsamic Vinaigrette): Grapes are modified to kill the deadly Pierce's disease bacterium.
Sugar (for the Lemonade): Sugar beets are being modified to be resistant to glyphosate, a popular pesticide.

Calamari-Frying oil, squid.
*Salmon-Fish.
*Tempura Shrimp-Shrimp and tempura sauce. Sauce is Genetically engineered because of soft wheat flour.
Grilled Pineapple-Pineapple
*Cauliflower-Cauliflower
*Dark Chocolate Pudding Pie-Dark chocolate, pudding, fudge, chocolate chips, whip cream, and pie. The pie is genetically engineered because the pie crust has wheat in it which is genetically engineered and so is the sugar cane from which sugar is derived.

ReplyDeleteThe meal we chose was a Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger (from Jack in the Box)
Ingredients (w/ info on genetic modification)
Patties: Meat comes from animals. Usually animals are not genetically modified unless you count rare cases like Dolly. But, when the meat is taken, there may be some alteration to it, such as inserting a chemical to make it last longer and not mold (chemical unknown), the meat can become genetically modified.
Cheese: The cheese from cows is of course, cured with water. The cows that create the cheese however can be inserted with certain chemicals that make them grow larger and/or create more milk.
Bacon: Bacon comes from pigs. Surprisingly, the bacon can be genetically modified before the pig becomes bacon. Selective breeding can alter the amount of meat the next pig holds. Take the Harvest of Fear activity for example. The selective breeding can effect the size. Different types of sodium chemicals also can be added to add more flavor.
Mayo-Onion Sauce: This sauce contains canola oil, which has been modified for some time. In the earlier 60s, scientists have modified oil to be pest resistant.
Ketchup: Ketchup comes from tomatoes (obviously) and tomatoes has been slightly genetically modified. Adding enzyme polygalacturonase softens the fruit in order for it to be used in productions easier. This may have some effect on the ketchup, but probably won't. Tomatoes have also been modified to live longer in some cases
Mustard:There has been thought of GM mustard, but no steps towards it.
Buns: Although bread has been modified in certain cases, fast food companies reject any type of GM bread due to cost and delivery.

ReplyDeleteSteak Dinner with Mashed Potatoes and a glass of water
Steak: The steak has been genetically engineered. The type of steak is filet mignon. Steak comes from the cows. The cows are being fed a many types of foods, barely are organic, natural materials. For example, corn. Corn is given to cows. Corn was created by the aztecs and is not found out in the wild. Corn is not natural. The cow is also injected with chemicals after death to add flavor to the meal.
Marinade: Contains ketchup which is genetically modified. The mixture contains squished tomatoes, sugar, and corn syrup. Corn syrup contains corn.
Potatoes:
Starch is added for flavor. Chemicals are injected into the potatoes to add flavor. Potatoes are eaten everyday and are popular in the United States as potato chips or french fries.
Water:
Chemicals are added and removed through processing plants to make the water to clean and make it cleaner.
