Human impact

41 comments:

  1. Industrialization injures the environment. We have a finite amount of resources and the humans are using them fast. I want to learn more about human diets and consumption. In 2050 we will learn about other factors in the death in our environment.

  2. 1. The positive influence is that some people are showing respect for the planet and are attempting to reduce garbage output, etc. The many negative influences are deforestation, disease, water and air pollution and overpopulation. These are just a select few negative impacts we have on the planet.

    2. Some limitations are that we cannot be sure with all of the data we are given whether it be field work or computers. This can also be a problem as well.

    3. I would like to explore more on the effects of overpopulation in countries.

  3. Some of the things that are negtively impacting the environment is the massive weather changes around the world because scientist are predicting that by 2050 the north pole will be the hottest place on the Earth. Another thing impacting the Earth in a negative way is the population growth and the more people there are the more resources, natural and non, we will have to use. Something positively impacting the environment would be the plans on trying to improve the environment such as recycled products and ways to save energy and exapmle would be the 29 scientists that got together to try to help the environment different ways.

Some limitation would be the technology and the resources we have today such as computers. To reach the Scientist goal of predicting weather days to weeks in advance they would need supercomputers and high tech technology.

I would like to explore africa. I would like to go see the plains, the rain forests and all the cities of Africa. I've meet people before who went to Africa and they said it was a amazing and something new that everyone should see.

Proof. There is definitely proof but some people refuse to accept it they don't care if there great great grand children will have to live through horrors because nobody would believe the global warming and everything that is starting to grow because of our laziness and carelessness.

  4. "Climate simulation and prediction will come of age only with an ongoing record of changes as they happen." while computers are recording data scientists are recording visual hands on data for climate change while looking at the deforestations in a forest or a jungle. There are definitely lots of risks with technology of losing data or for it crashing. The people for trying to sustain life(my partner) says that he beleives we will have to start over with new inventions starting a new industrial revolution.

  5. Advances in Technology can harm the environment. If we keep advancing in tech like this we could push the environment beyond repair. We need to stop with the technology, especially if the stuff we're making (iPads) is useless. Even if it is "magical" it's bad. I hate iPads.

  6. I want to learn more of the impact of climate has on animals. I think that we need more information about global warming. In my discussion we talked about how. In about 39 years we will find out how bad we have abused our earth. Also how our diet affects our growth and we can predict how tall we will be in future generations. Also e concern there is in our world about our planet.

  7. Positive influences on the environment include recycling, turning off list, etc.
Negative influences on the environment include using petroleum, weakening other resources after limiting another.

Some limitations and problems in relation to the environment include creating cars that run on water or air. Problems with this include that it has taken a long time just to develop a basic understanding of how we would go about doing this. We may not have this project completed for maybe 100s of years.

I would like to explore more about population fluctuations and what causes them, and more.

    Thanks for listening (:

  8. I think that we are causing both a positive and a nega tie influence on the environment. Humans are the ones who are destroying the Earth with many things we do. Such as air pollution with factories pouring smoke into the air and having oil in the water which is hurting animals and creatures that live there.

We have a positive influence because of all the people trying to help stop pollution. Even the smallest little act can help in the long shot.

So I like to think that humans are two sides of the same coin.we are destroying the world we live in and we are helping to save it at the same time.

We are limited by the fact that can't have everyone in the world help out with the environment. It's not like we can just broadcast all over the world saying "Help out the environment and recycle and do all you can to help out the world". We have a problem that people just don't care about the environment at all. There are people thAt will just walk around and throw trash in lakes or in a forest. They are obviously not trying to help out the environment.

  9. In the age of the Mayans, patterns were discovered to be related to significant events in major ways through astronomy. Also, survival of the fittest has been around since the beginning of time. These are the fundamentals of human impacts on our planet. In the past 10,000 years, we have able to witness most of the changes in our lifetime. With the advancement of technology, comes population growth, pollution, and the overall destruction of the Earth. This arises the question of "are the secrets of mother nature meant to be kept hidden?" In a biblical sense, we should have faith in G-d and believe that he has a master plan for all of us. But technology has proved otherwise, along with philosophers and a few unlikely people.

  10. The articles we discussed were about attempting to figure out the limits of the Earth, analyzing the logistics behind the growth of the human population, and attempting to analyze how much of climate change is caused by humans.

In the future perhaps we could spend a bit more time looking at streamlined data from multiple sources, supporting different theories or arguments, etc.

I really don't have many ideas, actually. :x

  11. In Sustaining Life On Earth I found it interesting that one of the problems we have is development. We have gotten very far with all our technology and everything, but it may be a bad thing. Ancient civilizations (like the Mayans) had a balanced population. If they went up they would go down instead of steadily increasing like we are now. With our development and knowledge we can live for a long time. That means more pollution, more need for resources, and so on. Then again, without development, where would we be? We might do the opposite of overpopulation.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The population as dramatically over the last million years. With more people becomes a higher demand in for energy sources and agriculture. Humans have deforested enough trees to fill the whole united states. People how do not believe should because there is a widespread of evidence for environmental concern. James Gias' theory was that life itself seems to create the conditions for it's own survival. We basically are in charge of creating the conditions in which we live.
Before we find a solution to the environmental issues, we have to look at the cause and effect first. They wanted to make models,to see the past and future, but those proved to be untrustworthy. Their next idea was to create a super computer that would map everything out.

    ReplyDelete
  13. We have a great impact on our planet. Over population is a huge problem that we have, in the next generation the population is going to be threw the roof. The avaliable land on earth is depleting, so are the natural reasorces, and fresh water supplies, and in like 40-50 years it's going to be even worse and there is going to be another factor, more and more people. The earth can't handle so many people that make so much waste and pollution, a temporary solution is being greener and not over populating one area and have only 5 people per square mile in another and making it more even. Another thing that i learned from reading stutaining life on earth is that the height of people (like in a general stand point) the taller the population is the healthier they are, like right now the regular size of a person is 5'8 and about 1000 years ago we were taller which means we were healthier back then. I thought that was interesting.:) thanks for listening

  14. The article 'human Impact On Climate' was based on the cons we humans are doing to the planet. It was saying how we must find a solution, and that before we are able to find a solution we have to figure out the cause and effect. We obviously already know the affect considering we live in it, and we know most of the main causes;humans, fossil fuse, etc. The thing we do not know is how each cause is contributing to the effect. They were talking about creating suer computers to regulate and follow the climate change and predict the climate change in the future. I think we should try to find another way besides super computers that is just as effective, but easier to use.

The second article i read was called setting boundaries. It was saying how there is a hole in the ozone, and i compared it to a blanket. Like if a blanket had a hoe in it, it woukd still be affective, just not as affective. It wa saying how our decisions are affecting the earth.

    ReplyDelete
  15. In the other article I learned that it is impossible to fix our mess, but it is easily reachable.

  16. Humans have changed the Earth drastically throughout the the past century. Pollution has become rampant throughout out the world. It has killed thousands whether they be human or animal lives. For example the BP oil spill has taken the lives of too many fish and marine mammals. The spill has also riddled the water on beaches and in areas of fishing with a dark color making tourism and the seafood market in the gulf coast fall hard onto of itself. However, even with these hardships, the human race still survives. Whether the force is of millions or one a strong movement has propelled people to try to save their planet. With this, it is possible the humans can change the world just as drastically as they did before but for the better. Scientists are measuring and watching levels of pollution and greenhouse gasses to be sure they do not reach point-of no-return levels; or running simulations that could show us the path to saving our planet. More and more people are recycling to try to reduce waste we produce. Thousands of solutions are being tried every day. We just need to find the right one.

  17. We have a huge impact on earth. Factories and power plants create so much smoke and gas that ruining the climate of earth. We need to stop this by starting small in order to stop this and save our earth. Earth is where we live. Earth is what we depend on. Why are we harming our home with all this pollution. It just isn't right!

  18. I now know that there will be a max for the human population. When that is reached, the human population will start to downsize.

  19. We're all getting shorter, our diets are going from 3 healthy meals to a few snacks and a bag of chips, we're having more kids, needing more for our comfort, and caring less. The world is going to keep going the way it is and we cannot sustain ourselves.

  20. The expert that helped me said that their article was about how weather will effect us in the future. She talked about carbon dioxide build up. And how since predictions are not accurate because long term monitoring was not started soon enough. Scientists need years and years of the past weather for long term weather monitoring. But that is not available. She also spoke about weather getting more dangerous as life continues. An example she gave me was a volcano erupting and ash covering the sky making the world cooler.

  21. Population is increasing. We all know that. But some people don't know that population fluctuates. Every 500 years or so, population declines a bit, and then it booms again. In the ancient past, civilizations such as the Egyptians and Mayans lasted thousands of years. But they experienced fluctuations too! But our civilization hasn't declined for 1,700 years. We've had our booms, so where's the decline? With our medicines and care today, it may not come for a long time. With the population increasing, the planet becomes more and more in jeopardy. Each human increases the damage done by just a little bit more.

    ReplyDelete
  22. We are transferring to a warmer, more crowded, more connected diverse world.
There are 3 major fluctuations for our population. Those including, tool making, then agriculture, and lastly the rise of industry, which we are currently approaching the end of.
The population is currently increasing pretty fast. To maintain the same population, each woman would need to average 2.1 child births. We are currently at 3.2, and our population is soon going to double. Twice the population means four times the agriculture, 6 times the energy use, and 8 times the value of global economy.
In the past 10,000 years, we have deforested an area the size of the continent of North America.

  23. Sustainability:

When the Earth reaches it's human capacity, the population will plunge dramatically, because of lack of resources. To be continued.

  24. For my article, I read "Sustaining Life," which had a clear purpose, even though some parts were lengthy and confusing. The statement made was that "life on this ever-changing planet could be sustained if organic matter could reproduce itself." Scientists are most likely finding a fast way for organic matter to reproduce, but in the mean time we should do what we can to prevent the earth from getting any worse. Awareness of this has risen across the world rather quickly, but we aren't doing as much as we should. If the world continues to change this fast, it will be unbearably hot and crowded in just a few decades- not that it already isn't. Antarctica is still cold, but it is estimated to become of the hottest places on Earth by 2050. We can't reverse things like that, but we can prevent them from happening if we combine technological advancement (and ideas) with the world's environmental concern. However, we have so many other issues to deal with, so the future looks grim.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I learned from the article "human impact on climate" that humanity's impact on climate is becoming worse and worse. Scientists are trying to find ways to keep the earth from destruction as the earth's population is approaching 9 billion. I s surprised to learn that climate change is currently only modest, but is it predicted to become dramatically changed by the middle of the 21st century. It become the worst condition of climate in the past ten thousand years. Carbon dioxide that fossil fuels, automobiles, and power plants produce stays in the atmosphere for centuries, swallowing solar radiation.

  26. A positive and negative effect is happening to the environment because of the human species. Although we cause a huge amount of pollution due to greenhouse gases and Carbon Dixode, but there is some hope. There is a prediction of the advancement of technology during the year 2100. This would increase our population exponentially because old eras had the same thing happen, but we may have a way to stop the growth of global warming. Yet people will still pollute the Earth, not really knowing how much damage they are doing to the environment. If this continues, our outer atmosphere will drastically increase temperature wise and increase the amount of precipitation. We should stop the amount of global warming going.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The world is being pulluted and the only way to survive through it is if organic matter reproduced itself rapidly. There many pollutants that impact the world such as co2. It is an invisible pollutant and too much of it is bad. There is also aerosol which is visible and in many places such as china. If our birth rates were at 2.1 our population wouldn't grow so rapidly. Our average birth rate is 3.2 And our average age is 65. Our average is height is 5 feet and 8 inches. Hunter-gathers height wads 5 feet 10 inches. We have lost nutrition and resources.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Humans have such a huge impact on this planet! Our Earth looks so good when not invaded by a human population. My partner Jackson showed me a google map aerial view of a few lakes in Asia. One was a light shade of blue that nobody lives near, then he showed me a picture of Lake Victoria which was almost black from pollution mostly trash and sewers flowing into it. Foreign countries are polluting more than us (some don't even care) but that's still no excuse for the United States. We can do better. Scientists have projected that there will be a dramatic climate change in 2050, causing a lot of the ice af the North Pole to melt. We need to watch ourselves. During the industrial age and ever since, carbon has increased 33%. If we don't change the way we treat the environment, this will be even more sure to happen.

  29. "Sustaining Life on Earth"
"In particular, I believe the world of the next century will be hotter and more crowded, more connected yet diverse." This quote was taken from the article. I believe what the author was trying to communicate was that overpopulation and global warming would be essentially destroying the world, yet people would be closer and more accepting of each other than ever, without getting caught up on religion or differing opinions. Perhaps he meant that the Earth's death would cause the people to learn how to live properly with each other.

  30. Okey-dokey, what Keilin taught me today is that in order to save ourselves, we need to create international cooperation in order to save ourselves (I think we should be talking about this rather than than whether or not the Holocaust happened or not-which it did, btw, I talked to s survivor-at the the league of nations). Also that it is hard to predict the future in regards to pollution because of the change in landscape, and small details like how rain condenses. Many things that seem insignificant, like the world's temperature raising one degree, will affect the whole world. Our climate is rising it may very well be the death of everything, do in order to buy ourselves some time ore at least fix one thing, how do we cool the earth? We are on a natural cooling and warming cycle, if we can figure out how to cool the earth's temperature then we can fix one problem and, at least, delay others. But since computers and projections can't predict the future accurately, we are not 100% sure on what's going to happen and Only have a general idea of of what's going on, but is that enough to learn to save ourselves?

  31. There has been an idea of developing a super computer far beyond the capabilities of our current technologies to be used to know of our past and understand so we can make more knowledgeable predictions of our future development as a species, planet, as well as other living and non living things that inhabit Earth. These computers would also specifically be used to understand weather patterns and make predictions. As well as technical changes the weather is also predicted to dramatically change. With the changing environment it is thought to be much warmer. This could be caused by deforestation, which reflects more sunlight that would normally cool the earth, as well as less protection from our weakening ozone. I personally think that we need to understand our past before we can predict our future, it is a lot harder to walk forward if you know where you've been. Possibly to be continued...

    ReplyDelete
  32. "Human Impact on Climate" is really interesting. It talks about how people are inadvertently harming the Earth. It says that super computers are needed to regulate and follow the climate changes.

    To be continued...

  33. Many thresholds have been crossed with the advance of technology. Greenhouse gases contribute a lot to depletion of ozone, but governments do not want to act due to the rising tensions throuout the world, and want to place more money in other things, like the military. Even though we can slow down the destruction of the atmosphere, we can never fully stop it. Deforestation is important, as is the sea level. The is the small needle of hope in the haystack.

  34. Sustaining Life on Earth

This article was mainly debating wether or not earth could sustain human life for very much longer seeing as how we are pretty much destroying the planet. There were two sides from what I gathered . One scenario that could sustain life on earth and another scenario that could not. I the first scenario humans kept on building new machines and did not clean the planet in the second scenario humans did clean the plant and they stopped creating so many machines. I think that the article had a very good point and that we do need to stop polluting or else there is no way human life or possibly an life will be able to exist here on earth.

In the age of the Mayans, patterns were discovered to be related to significant events through astronomy. All the while, survival of the fittest has been around since the beginning of time. These are the fundamentals of human impacts on our planet. In the past 10,000 years, we have been able to witness the largest amount of the changes in our lifetime. With the advancement of technology, comes population growth, pollution, and the overall destruction of the Earth. This arises the questions of, "are the secrets of mother nature meant to be kept hidden or free for all to uncover?" In a biblical sense, we should have faith in G-d and believe that he has a master plan for all of us. But technology has proved otherwise, along with philosophers and scientists. There have been 3 major surges of population increase at the times of crucial technology revolutions: necessity of toolmaking, upswing in agriculture, and the spread of industry. But these surges never go without interruptions. Illness and poverty, due to lack of clean water, food, and capacity, are fine examples of the interventions, causing height (which shows the well-being and nutrition in one’s lifestyle) to decrease and dips in society. Wars also contribute to these factors; they are caused by a multitude of motives, including developing countries, famine, environmental disasters, and scarcity of natural resources. They have numerous causes with one pushing everyone over the edge. We haven’t reached that point where everyone is completely convinced, therefore, we cannot possibly reach our goals until the event occurs. Additionally, Some say that “disasters are remedies for nations, pruning the luxuriance of the human race,” which leads to the survival of the fittest motif. Not only does our impacts effect the environment with water vapor and other greenhouse gasses, it effects the swings in politics as well. Is the “wisdom to expect surprises” all we will really have left, or will patterns accurately predict our fate as human beings?

  36. There are some very positive influences on the environment such as
people cleaning up and driving more fuel efficient cars. Sadly though,
it is easier to destroy the earth than to help it. For example, going
to work, drinking your water, or even just turning on the lights all
destroy the earth in their own unique way. By destroying the
environment the earth begins to destroy us. What I mean by this is
that by putting harmful emissions in the air, it is changing our
weather patterns, thus creating more natural disasters. I believe the
biggest limitation of protecting and restoring the environment is people simply not caring. If people don't care then we will get nowhere.

An area I would like to explore more is how our pollution can change our weather patterns to create more natural disasters.

  37. I disagree with the Scientific American article on human impact on earth. In the article, they had stated that it is now physically impossible to recover the earth from our pollution. I had found a hole in what they said, and noticed they stated that if all humans were to start being as green as possible for as long as possible, we would be able to change the planet's fate. They had contradicted what they said, but I agree with the fact that if we were all to help, we could help revive the earth. This, of course, would take many years, but it would be possible. Another fact disproving that it would not be possible is because the article was written about ten years ago and now, the technology has improved drastically to have better accuracy and intelligence. At the rate of our technological growth we can start making something like an air conditioner for earth.  All we may need are a couple satellites and lots of metal.  We could form a reflective shield in space that covers the sun's heat and cools it, but lets light go though with ease. I have read about something like this, but I don’t actually recall where I read it. It is a plausible idea that can be approached in a matter of a few years. Another problem causing pollution is overpopulation. Scientists have concluded that by 2012, we will have about 7 billion people living on earth. This causes more pollution because, with more people on this planet, we will have to kill more animals and cut down more trees and whatnot. Also, there will be more water and land pollution. Back in Mayan times, they had a birth rate that fluctuated often. On some years it went high, but for others, it went low. This kept the ecosystem in balance. Now, we have a high birth ratio at almost all times in all of the world. With this, there will be extreme overpopulation. The development of this is a curse, but it can also be a gift. Without overpopulation, we may die off, but with it, we will destroy earth.

I would like to explore more on the recovery from pollution and the steps we can take to fix the problems we created.

  38. Although our current output into the atmospheree is becoming rapidly unsustainable, it is certainly fixable. If we can develop third world countries such as sierra leone and Afghanistan with extremely high birth rates, we will effectively lower them through education and medicine. This will gradually slow our world to a replacement rate at 2.1 where population growth nullifies. Also, gradual adjustments of the human race and the biosphere could help cope with some major, although non-debilitating changes. Hopefully, government actions like the Kyoto protocol will be continued in cop 16 and 17, which are major climate Change conferences.

Our race has grown exponentially over the last 10,000 years in three stages that ended in a plateau. As of 2008, there were 6,697,254,041 people on Earth. if our population continues to expand at the same alarming rate, in addition to lack of resources will be subject to disease. Life will probably still be able to be sustained on Earth, at least of some sort, because our planet has dealt with billions of years of climate and atmospheric change and organisms continue to exist.

  40. Some would say that one of the biggest impacts on the environment is rain or human beings. I believe that both have a huge effect on the environment. Rain does a lot for the world. It waters all of he plants that do not usually get watered. It also helps water crops and vegetables grow so that we humans have more organic foods to eat. Human beings are also a biggest part of the environment growth because we care and tend for what mother earth has given us such as food, water, and oxygen. Along with positives, humans and rain give negative effects to the environment. Rain can sometimes drown plants and kill them. Rain can also flood towns and homes. Humans have wasted pace that could have been or something resourceful instead of being a place for trash. All of our trash we have either throw on the street of landfills.

Limitations on the environment start mostly with overpopulation. Overpopulation is what is happening right now with human beings. Too many people are being born and there is not enough food for everyone and people are starving to death because they do not have enough food.

I would like to explore more on what pollution is doing to the atmosphere.

I don't think that super computers are needed, as a lot of damage can be done to the planet in just the process of doing so. Maybe alternative, 'greener' method could be used, such as modifying the present super computers to adapt to the job of regulating the climate.

Also, the emissions of harmful gases have gotten out hand. We really need to keep our actions under control. After reading about this topic, if we behave in this way continually, it would be like having committed a pre-meditated murder.
