Good Morning, please watch the following video on the effects of nuclear radiation on the people of Chornobyl. It is quite a moving video, please blog your thoughts or emotions to the video when you are done.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvAJ_u3Q0Hw
The pictures and music really helped with the devastating feel of Chernobyl. The video showed the effects of the meltdown- something that was our fault entirely. Humans create disaster after disaster, triggered on purpose or accident, and never learn from their previous one. We are a careless, selfish species. We never learn and we never will. We are greedy and lazy and we do anything to make the most money out of the least work. We need to take better action- something WILL happen one day that our efforts now will not be able to handle. We need to get a grip on things.
ReplyDeleteThis video really made it clear to me that the effects of Chernobyl are long lasting. Seeing the stillborn, defected babies in the jars just killed me. All the children with ingrown legs and odd growths on their faces' was just a horrible sight. I'm pretty sure I'll remember most of e pictures used in this video forever.
ReplyDeleteI don't think words can truly describe what has happened in Chernobyl. It's a very sad thing to think about that children and people could have such bad defects after the meltdown. If the workers at the power plant had turned on the safety systems this might not have happened but we can never know for sure because we can't rewrite the past. I couldn't imagine how horrible it would be if the remaining material got out of the factory and spread throughout Europe. It would probably be the worst man made disaster in history.
ReplyDeleteThe video was an amazing tribute to the effects of the Chornobyl Disaster, showing the deformities of citizens, destruction that ravaged the city, and what the overall effect was. With this said, the images and video clips were startlingly moving as I was able to see the disaster in it's rawest form.

ReplyDeleteI think that the dramatic music combined with the disturbing pictures help set the mood of Chernobyl and the effects. Also the pictures of the factory how abandoned and deteriorated it looked made me seem almost frightened because of how much radioactivity was still inside that building and how maybe one heavy storm could cause all of europe to be covered in raidoactivity.
ReplyDeleteWow. That video was so powerful. I read the warning at the beginning, but I was still unprepared for the images that follows. Those poor, innocent people. They hadn't done anything wrong, yet they were doomed to live a challenging, terrifying life. I think it is really scary that the nuclear reactor that blew up still has the capability of blowing up all of Europe, and the only thing that's stopping it is a "decaying sarcophagus." I'm scared that this will happen again, and be more powerful, bring more destruction. It is also scary that what caused chernobyl was a few careless workers doing an INCREDIBLY dangerous experiment. It's mind-blowing, the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was a terrible disaster that effect everybody. It may not have effected them directly, but they were effected by either they were passed down traits of people who were in the Chernobyl disaster or they were given chemicals by those who encountered some of the nuclear gases that were in the air after the explosion. We all thought that the plant was safe but once the plant exploded it killed thousands of people. The explosion will be remember by many who had ancestors in the explosion or if they witnessed it because it was a very sad day.
ReplyDeleteThe video that I just watched really helped me understand just how devastating the disaster was. I now fully know that the disaster did not just affect the people living, but it also affected the people being created. The disaster caused very extreme birth defects. I think that this is the best video that we have watched so far to help us understand the magnitude of the Chernobyl disaster.
ReplyDeleteThis video was very grasping of the feel of the effects on children and people from the radiation from the nuclear meltdown. It is sad that this could have been prevented if workers would have made sure that the safety button worked. The Chernobyl plant could have even built a wall that was practically nuclear meltdown proof because they knew they were going to have a nuclear machine generator inside. It is very sad that many people only realize after something bad has happened that they should have taken the extra step to make something safer.
ReplyDeleteI feel sad for the families with the deformed and mutated children. I think the thought of man-made devastation is scary to most people. I thought that some images were fake at first then the thought that they could be real actually moved me.
ReplyDeleteThe Chernobyl video was disturbing and surreal. The defects that people suffered were diseases that I would expect to only see in a horror movie. But because there is truth behind everything, whether its fiction or not, the creators of horror movies have to be inspired by something. In this case, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion is a perfect model for those types of films. The picture that troubled me the most was those of children with birth defects, lying in pain as if they were morphed into an inhumane position. Sadly, this is common among those who have been directly exposed to toxic radiation. This made me wonder if the statement, "everything happens for a reason" is true. Maybe mother nature won't be able to fix our mistakes anymore.
ReplyDeleteThe movie really made you realize how much the people of Chernobyl were actually affected. It was almost depressing seeing what these children will have to live with for the rest of their lives. The children that were stillborn and had birth defects, I feel so bad for them because they have to live with that for the rest of their lives. This disaster truly was a horrible one, and the melted down reactor actually has the potential to release more nuclear material and kill all of europe. All that is protecting it is a decaying shell. I had no idea that the nuclear clouds could bring down helicopters. This is probably one of the worst disasters in human history.
ReplyDeleteThis video was very disturbing, this pictures were very graphic and the music really set the mood which was horrifying. This video showed me the dangers of living in an area that was exposed to such high amounts of radioactivity and toxic chemicals. Even now, present day, people are still born with some serious defects that devastating. These pictures used in the video send out a very strong message of how dangerous some things are, and we are the ones that are putting toxic chemicals and radioactivity near us. We are harming ourselves.
ReplyDeleteThis video was very intense and shows the many awful occurrences that Chernobyl took on the citizens of countries around the world. The effects of this disaster are too incredible to put into words. The poor people that were deformed by the radiation still suffer today and the families that helped them suffered as well because taking care of a deformed baby is much more difficult that a normal one. Thosewho think Chernobyl is the past and should be forgotten are wrong. Many still suffer the consequences and they may be repeated because the sarcophagus surrounding reactor number four is rapidly decaying and could litter all of Europe with its harmful radiation.
ReplyDeleteWhile I was watching the video, I didn't have any idea it would be that horrible. The images were really graphic and depressing. It in a way shows the effects mankind has created on itself. I was very shocked when I saw that little baby with a huge tumor-like thing coming out of its neck. The most saddening picture in the video was probably that child inside the mother with some kind of black circle on its head. This video really told me how bad the situation was, and that it is able to spread further if the Sarcophagus will fall down. If it does happen, then all of Europe could be destroyed. I hope humans realize that we should disband nuclear energy and weapons, because it will be the deadliest battle for supremacy. World War 3 may be fought with nuclear weapons, but World War 4 will be fought with sticks and stones.
ReplyDeleteThis video really opened my eyes and made me see what a devastating event this really was. When I saw all the pictures of the people who were effected by it, It made me sad that this was all our fault, and we possibly could have done something to stop it, but we didn't. All the people that will never lead a normal life because of the Chernobyl disaster, and some that will never even grow up to see the world. The video was so powerful and I hope someday the effects of this disaster will be gone forever, with only the memories to prove it really happened.
ReplyDeleteWow. That video was intense. I lost my other response, so this one is much shorter and less meaningful, but I know those pictures are going to haunt me tonight. Seeing the peoples pain in the pictures made me regret ever complaining about my pain, because what i have experienced is nothing close to the real thing. We need to realize that our stupid actions can kill people and scar millions of others. Every person in this world has a right to live with out pain, and when we don't think of what the consequences are, we don't think about the people who will be affected.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures in this video made me understand the horrible effects Chernobyl had on these peolple. Seeing the deformities made me feel the pain for the children and adults that are effected for the rest of their lives. It made me so sad knowing they have to live their whole lives hurting and feeling excluded and having someone do basic everyday things for them becausethey cannot do it themselves. I know this video has changed my point of view when i look at epople with these kinds of problems. Now I know what they are going through and how hurt they must be feeling.I now understand how thankful I am for not being affected by the devastating chernobyl.
ReplyDeleteI just...
ReplyDeleteI can't believe this. The kid with the extremely long leg almost made me throw up and cry at the same time. This video is messed up. I'll never watch it again. I can sit through every horror movie ever made, some that can't be named at school, and I still want to throw up after watching this. This will give me nightmares, horrible nightmares. I haven't had nightmares since I was 5 years old. The Chernobyl disaster gives me the fear that one day in our lifetime the Arizona nuclear reactor will do this. I don't want my children to have these birth defects, I don't want their children to and I don't want their children's children to. This has to be stopped or at least handled with more care by more professional people. Nuclear energy should be banned.
ReplyDeleteYou know, the poster of the video mentioned that not all of the photos are actually related to the video, and were "added for effect"- actually, isn't that kind of propaganda? It's certainly lying, and along with the ripped movie trailer music (yes, I've heard it before) it does sort of feel like a well executed exploitation of emotions. Well, you did ask for my thoughts and emotions, no matter how irrelevant. :x
ReplyDeleteYeah, Chernobyl did cause birth defects, cancer and mutations. I saw the data showing cancer rates increasing, though with the amount of humans that are born and die in a single minute it doesn't seem to have much of an impact. I'm curious how common birth defects are, though?
The video really opened my eyes on what happened to the people because of Chernobyl. I knew that they were affected, but I never realized how devastating the effects were. This all happened (and more) just because of a mistake. This video made me wonder if these nuclear reactors are really necessary. do we really want to put all these lives on the line just for some power?
ReplyDeleteGod, I'm sort of a hypocrite.
ReplyDeleteAnd that kid with the screwed up eyes and lip... @_@
It evoked the emotion of sadness in me. I know it was a terrible thing that happened but there will be worse. Unfortunately, history repeats itself, but never in the same way. But still, this is huge. If the clay is decaying, their government should not be waiting. They need to act at the right time, which might not be now but when the time comes they should not be hesitant to make sure it does not poison the rest of Europe. From generation to generation deformities will occur now for thousands of people and animals, they should not force the same fate upon others. Personally, I cannot feel the pain of others just by hearing about their pain. To me, a few thousand is just a number, it does not mean much to me. I have to physically and emotionally sense the pain, fear and hopelessness to just get a sense of understanding of what these people went through. That is why history repeats. We don't understand.
ReplyDeleteThis really touched me. It is so sad what people have to live with just because of some experiment. This effected thousands of people just because scientists wanted to test something out. These people are good reminders of the devastation we can cause to each other and to the environment. It really tugged on my heart strings. It was really emotional and difficult to watch. The pictures are forever burrowed in my mind. All of this could have been prevented by one simple action, but history does not play out that way. They could have prevented the largest nuclear problem that would spare thousands of lives. I was really shocked to learn that there is enough nuclear power left to destroy Europe. Can't they dispose of it? What will happen if the sarcophagus breaks? The fate of Europe is relying on the sarcophagus to keep the country physically together.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures of the children in this video is just horrifying and the music makes it even worse. It is terrifying how the kids are still effected to this day and that there is still enough radiation to cover all of Europe. The moment we go into a world war with nuclear bomb we are going to all die.
ReplyDeleteThis is a true tragedy, thousands of people forced out of their homes, thousands killed, thousands still suffering from the effects today. One person making a huge mistake. This could have been easily avoided, all the suffering gone. You think we would have learned our lesson with previous disasters like Love Canal, but one who doesn't know their history is likely to repeat it. It was bound to happen though. Just not on that large scale. It spread throughout the world and harmed lots of people. I sure do hope we have learned our lesson for good.
ReplyDeleteThis video really portrays the effects of this disaster. I liked how it showed the extent of the disaster. The deformities were very disturbing, but we can hope that they discourage anymore testing on active reactors. The helicopter that crashed posed some questions to me. Did the cloud eat through the metal and throw it out of balance? Or was it just a piloting error? This video gave more questions than answers.
ReplyDeleteI think that the music really went with all the pictures and the content of the video. THis explosion caused so much radiation and it still has so much in it left that it can destroy Europe. The only thing stopping it is the decaying sarcophagus. The effects can still be seen by the mutations the radiation caused and the people didn't understand how powerful radiation actually was until it happened to them and left devastating consequences for the entire city.
ReplyDeleteThe images in this movie are disturbing, and show the true effect of what people have done. Knowing that the radiation could destroy all of Europe, and that it is only protected by the sarcophagus is scary. It is horrifying to see that all these children are forever deformed and mutated is horrible. Babies with legs longer than they are, and heads the size of watermelons. To think that this is all because of a disaster in which people were uninformed is not pleasant.
ReplyDeleteIt's depressing, but it almost seems wrong not to know, to be painlessly oblivious. I wonder if the pilots ho didn't know of the radiation danger were misinformed because of the panic, because we didn't know, or because their sacrifice was vital to saving Europe and they didn't have the time to find volunteers.
ReplyDeleteI found the video absolutely unbelievable. First off,, the contents was simply stunning. The terrifying effects of the radiation on the people was really represented there. And then there was the music, text, and other effects the creator used. The music was definitely a huge contribution to the overall mood of the video. It was intense and fairly simple. Also, the fact that all of the text was short and in red and white on a black background made it much more straightforward, which i liked and thought added to the effect of devastation. Another thing was that almost all of the images were in black and nite. I found that very powerful, as though it were saying there's no happiness or color, no gray area even, when you think about what happened.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad whats happened. But what is even more sad is that people would let something like this happen. If they knew that the reactor would be unstable then they should have taken more precautions to prevent this from happening. It is terrible when innocent people have to suffer the consequences of other's mistakes. To me it is shocking that there would not have been an evacuation plan for this because when you live in an area near a nuclear power plant you should have some form of safety just in case something like this was to happen.
ReplyDeleteThe video on Chernobyl showed me how big of a disaster Chernobyl really was. Some of the horrifying pictures of what happened at Chernobyl were difficult for me to watch. The graphic pictures displayed the effects of the radiation very well. What I really found scary was that there is still enough radiation there to cover all of Europe.
ReplyDeleteAll of the innocent people had to suffer from this accident. The pictures of the children was terrifying and sad. People are still being affected today. Thousands died from an easily avoidable incident. There is still enough radioactive material to destroy Europe. When the accident happened, the sent helicopters to drop sand, clay, and lead, but they weren't told about the radioactive clouds, and the helicopters went down. That is another way people were killed by another easily avoidable situation. Basically, the video was horrifying by the way children were suffering, and how thousands were killed. Not to mention the music wasn't helping either. We have to be careful because of the radioactive material capable of destroying Europe is still there.
ReplyDeleteThis video was just horrifying. I can't even think of words powerful enough to describe how sad it was. I just think of how my life could have been different if my parents had lived anywhere near where radioactivity settled down. Because of one faulty reactor, people were killed, children were born with extreme defects in their DNA, and the landscape is forever changed. The Chernobyl explosion is still producing effects today, and we can't ever forget that it happened. If one reactor accidentally created such a disaster, what could a planned disaster do to the world? The circumstances could be thousands of times worse. I consider myself lucky to have never come in contact with anything of this sort, and hope I never have to.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I found that video quite disturbing. The problems that children were subjected is terrifying. However, I feel that some emotional exploitation was certainly used in that video. First of all, it only showed children, which we find, and are, the most vulnerable people. However, all of those were very sad because not only could the external birth defects be terrible, but the internal are probably exponentially worse. Although, I found a couple of the pictures to be almost propaganda, because some of the pictures had children pressed up against glass, making the extremities of their bodies look much bigger than they truly are. Also, the children were always in more heart-wrenching poses, like having their mom hold them like an infant.
ReplyDelete**I meant white, not nite. Oops!
ReplyDeleteFrankly, that video was just plain scary. It really showed you how horrible the effects of Chernobyl was. You would read about how they didn't tell how horrible the effects of the radiation to the rescuers. The video would show you the defective babies and people that have been permanently harmed by the radioactivity. Not only have those people been deformed because of this accident, they have also been moved out of their homes and have had there life pretty much ruined. Chernobyl and the surrounding area will be radioactive for centuries to come. This is the kind of thing we cannot let happen again.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures in this video were terrifying, scary, horrifying, horrific, and synonym after synonym. It made it pretty clear to me, truly, how bad the effects of Chernobyl were, and to know its still radioactive today makes me wonder what would happen if this happened more than once in multiple places. Also, the fact that there was enough still in the reactor to put a nice coat of radiation on all of Europe, only being held back by a sarcophagus stunned me. That's pretty crazy. If all this is just from a power plant, what will happen if we get into a nuclear war? With the nuclear capabilities some countries are acquiring, we're not far off from doing some SERIOUS damage to us and the planet.
ReplyDeleteThe video really showed of what the effects were on Chernobyl. It was quite terrifying that the pictures were that distorted. Deformations did have a big difference in what the children had. Obviously, nuclear reactors are very dangerous when they meltdown, and scientists shouldn't of had "played with them". Because of an experiment of how long the reactor could go with low power was very risky, and there are earlier meltdowns that the scientists should have known.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, this video did make me think in some odd ways. Like when the helicopter came crashing down, what was that from? Did a cloud of radiation really take down a helicopter with clay? I'm very skeptical about this.
This video is sad to the point where it's almost depressing. I'm mortified that there's still enough nuclear power to destroy Europe in that reactor, especially because the sarcophagus containing it is rotting away. All the pictures of deformed children with giant feet or extra heads were scarring, and the music and occasional color invert or zoom in just made it more scarring and depressing, Can you imagine how it would be to live with terrible birth defects like that? The worst part is that some of the people in photos look older, probably meaning they acquired the defects after birth. Imagine waking up and suddenly having a messed up body!
ReplyDeleteI think that the music really helped to portray the emotion the video's creater wanted to covey to the audience. Overall the video seemed to have a very clear sence of devastation and loss. The picturers of the children were very symbolistic of how this disaster is not only going to harm people and the environment today, for for years, as well as generations, ahead. Yes, Chernobyl was a catastrophe, but I think a few of the pictures were a tad dramatic and overdone. I mean, there were probably birth defects and deformities before the disaster. It was just a little too dramatic.
ReplyDeleteIn the words of Luke, "that was jacked up." Wow, this video showed perfectly the extent of the damage. The birth defects experienced by the Russian children are simply horrifying. Seeing how their lives will never be normal, for those who survived at all, this is proof of the human damage that is experienced in an event like this..
ReplyDeleteI have seen many of these pictures last night when I was searching for Chernobyl some of the scenes I had found had not shown up and many pictures I had not seen before were featured in the video. I still have the same thoughts I did last night which was that these people are suffering. I have found pictures of children screaming from the pain, people who are shrinking, conjoined babies, diseases that cause people to be come disformed, and people who have committed suicide because they couldn't stand to live crippled and having to take so much medicine. I see people who are still thinking like anyone of us yet who are outcasts because of this nuclear power destruction. I see people who cannot conceive thought for they have been brain damaged yet who still feel the pain of their inures and disformities. And who do we have to blame for all this? The workers who ran the test, yes. The government who tried to conceal the the magnitude of the problem, yes. But the main killer is us. Yes, many of us were not born at this time, but our parents and their parents before them, no one ever did enough to day stop. And today, we are saying stop, but we aren't doing anything. Words invoke feeling and spark the flame of action. But unless that flame catches fire, nothing will be done, and something far worse can happen in the future.
ReplyDeleteThis video was extremely sad. It makes me wonder what would happen if the shelter that contained the reactor were to collapse and all the radiation disperse into the air. I also wonder if that were to happen, would it affect us in the U.S ?
ReplyDeleteThis video was terrifying. I came across most of these photos last night and, though got a good look at them, it didn't invoke so much horror or helplessness in me. I wanted to help these people, but I couldn't move with fear. The video was, I can't say touching, but disturbing. It gives me goosebumps just thinking over it.
ReplyDelete
