  6. A plan, public knowledge that there will be a disaster in the future (usually), public understanding of your plan, a hospital, a safe place for the population of the disaster area to stay, an alarm system, signs and advertisement on where to go and what to do in the event of a disaster, and ways to limit or stop the destruction. Other than that, you need the people to abide by and follow all of these things.

  11. Important items and plans for an evacuation plan from a disaster like a wildfire are:

Removal of excess trees- trees are the easiest way to spread a wildfire and removing trees in areas where there are too many can help diminish the fire.

Firefighters in large amounts- fighting off a fire like a wildfire would take more
than a few firefighters- having large amounts can quickly shrink it.

Evacuation routes for residents- if the fire spreads to the city, citizens need to find a safe route out of the city to prevent injuries and casualties.

  17. In the simulation gem yesterday, i found that there are many things you need to do when planning an evacuation plan, like...

    1. Make sure everything is in a safe place where there is little or no risk of damage.

    2. Make sure you have proper defenses to prevent damage.

    3. Make sure that, in case things do get ruined, like houses, hotels, or apartments, there are other places for people to stay, and make sure they're stable.

    4. Have a plan that injures and/or kills as few people as possible by taking less disaster-prone streets, roads, or other places.

    5. Make sure you have food in case it is inaccessible after a disaster.

  18. -defenses such as trees, wetlands, drainage ditches, and levees on the coast of the land and surrounding buildings located near the body of water
-cover all wells and water sources that may be vulnerable to the water
-Move or rebuild all buildings that are near the water to higher ground so as to avoid flooded buildings
-evacuate members of the community to higher ground and if a severe flood occurs such as one from a tropical storm, evacuate them to another country of city because tornadoes and tsunamis can spark from the flood
-Farm land should be relocated to higher ground as well because they will be destroyed by the water
-flash flooding happens very quickly so an evacuation plan is very important for all citizens to know.
-evacuation plan: train that can carry all citizens and move them to higher ground and train and tracks need to be coated in a waterproof paint so they are not immediately ruined should a flash flood occur

-focus any construction on the highest ground available. It may be necessary to actually demolish buildings and houses on lower ground and create buildings on higher ground to replace them.
-provide proper protection for wells in the area, so that water isn't contaminated.
-basins around the river and water level buildings can help water from reaching houses and power facilities, but would need to be done in excess to replace the steps listed above.

  25. There are a variety of items that are important to an evacuation because there are a variety of disasters. The evacuation plan for a wildfire has items ranging from fire retardant to bottled water. A full list is below.

    1. Evacuation Routes: These are the most important items in an evacuation plan. A way to evacuate.

    2. First Aid: Although there is a need for suppressing the raging fire, the safety and health of those being evacuated is the #2 priority.

    3. Fire Retardants: The next step is usually stepping immediately into work on the fire.

    4. Bottled water: This should be provided to surrounding residential areas for a safe water supply. This is in defense of ash entering residential water supplies as well as for shelters.

    5. Shelter: Once everyone is evacuated there must be shelters put in place if not already in place.

    6. Fire-Fighters/ Fire Officials: The final item is man-power to fight the fire to contain and extinguish the fire.

    9. temporary housing- in case of homes being destroyed
    10. warning signal to the public- so they can do the immediate preparation work

    ReplyDelete
  38. Preparation is extremely important in case of a tsunami, because there is often very little warning before the disaster. The most important ingredients in a safety plan are:

A clear evacuation system consisting of various warning devices like radio broadcasts and sirens

An elevated shelter area that will be safe from tidal waves.

    A nearby seismic activity sensor.

Defenses to slow the oncoming water, such as sand dunes, mangroves, and water breakers.

A hospital near enough to the shelter area so it won't be affected by the tsunami.

An organized group ready to respond after the disaster.

  40. Items that are needed are:
1: Education- If a disaster occurs, people will be able to react calmly and get to safety quickly.

2: Shelter- Covering from the disaster is critical for survival.

3-: Food and Water- Disaster such as a hurricane can cause damage that lasts for days before it will ever settle down. People need items that cause them to stay alive for a long period of time.

4: An evacuation route- Just in case leaving the city is necessary

5: First Aid/Hospital- Injuries are an immediate danger to death. Some type of first aid kit is needed, or go towards a hospital that is near by.

6: A form of communication- Having some way to contact the outside world may save a persons life in the event of a natural disaster. Help can come to you. A radio would be good to bring as well for updates on the condition of the disaster.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Protection-For floods, drains. For hurricanes, wind breakers.

Shelter-People can't just sit on the beach and hope that they wont get hurt.

Evac. system- If people dont get in the shelter it won't do much good

Training- If people know what to do the rest works better.

  43. Many items and concepts are need for safe evacuation and prevention. For a tsunami here are some ideas. An undersea seismograph is a good idea because it would give an early warning. Routes to higher ground are most important, as that saves many lives. Sandbags can be used as sealants on houses. They absorb a lot of water and hold it well. Next, shelter, water and food are essential to the people who are now stranded or homeless. After that, do a damage assessment and start to rebuild. If there are dead, bury them so no one will be infected.

  44. These were easy to think of, but IMPOSSIBLE to prioritize. Everything is of the same importance.

Anyway, my disaster was a wildfire. I think that every city needs:

    1. Well-planned evacuation routes so that everyone can escape safely.

    2. A disaster-proof shelter for everyone to stay until the disaster is resolved.

    3. Radio and television broadcasts, as well as early warning sirens, to warn people of the upcoming disaster and help them evacuate early.

    4. Paramedics and first aid for people who couldn't or didn't evacuate and were harmed by the disaster.

    5. A source of water, like a water tower, that is protected from the fire.

    6. Firefighters to put out the fire as quickly as possible.

    7. Firebreaks so the fire destroys as little as possible.

    8. People to rebuild/fix houses that were destroyed by fires.

Quite honestly, I'd rank these all at #1, actually.

    5) Hospitals for those who need it.
    6) Clean food and water for them.
    7) A method of receiving news, such as a radio.
    8) A method of communication with family members, such as a phone or computer.

  46. A natural disaster prone city or town needs to have:
1: An alternate source of water besides the main water line,
2: High ground for floods, tsunamis, and wildfires,
3: Evacuation protocol and training seminars,
4: Secondary shelters like bunkers, cellars, or even your roof.
5: A hospital or a medical station, able to administer first aid to those who need it.
6: Emergency services for a fast response time to the disaster,
7: An early warning system, for fast evacuation or preparation.
8:Emergency supplies stored in ultra secure locations that have easy access in the case of isolation from a main food supply source.
9: An emergency call station manned with radios, long distance speakers, sirens, and a local area broadcasting system.
10: A backup plan for if anything goes wrong, they would be prepared.
11: Building reinforcement and safety areas.
12: A fallback point for stragglers, homeless, or otherwise impaired.
13: Home defense systems for various natural disasters, like metal roofs and shutters, reinforced foundations, and fire resistant paint or outer coating, and the removal of potential hazards from your local area.
14: The removal of potential hazards from the town or city, or disaster resistant vulnerable points.
15: various pre-designated Evac. areas, for fast extraction from the area, and deposition to a safe area, far away from the danger zone, either by land, air or sea.

  47. When experiencing or preparing for a natural disaster, a city will need to have
A sheltered place for people to take refuge at. This place needs to be safe from the disaster and large enough to be comfortable for many people to inhabit. Needs places to sleep, eat, and needs a bathroom.
Food and water stored away so nobody will go hungry.
    Easily accessible first aid.
Officials to keep everybody calm, and to direct them to the shelter or safe place. Also needed in the case of an evacuation of the shelter and to keep order.
    Warnings on T.V and radio.
Before hand, everybody should know what to do during the disaster to minimize deaths and injuried. (such as having "fire drills" to make sure everybody knows the where to go and what to do.)
Note: Money put aside for all of this is VERY helpful.

  48. I feel that for a tsunami, a city needs...
    1. A hospital far from the coast or on high ground, to keep it from being destroyed.
    2. A really good evacuation plan, that will be practiced every once in a while, so people would know what to do. This plan would include radio and tv warnings, signs, and an alarm.
    3. A shelter far from the coast, much like a stadium or something huge and built well, so the water won't destroy it. Although unlike Katrina, there would be plenty of food and water, bathrooms, and everything needed to survive.
    4. A good line of defense like water breakers, sand dunes, trees, and mangroves.
    5. Have the buildings be strengthened by supports to cut down on expenses.
    6. Insurance to also cut down on the amount of money lost.
With these defenses and plans, the city should make it through the tsunami ok.

    4) Evacuation sirens, and signs
    5) Individual emergency kits (including food, water, extra clothes, flashlights, batteries, etc.)
    6) Building reinforcements on major public structures
    7) Traffic directors to distribute the traffic evenly
